| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Saturday 8-Jun-13 05:00pm Nine Rivers Marathon implementation of the magnum opus of the Scottish composer James Dillon, a unique experience.
Three of The Netherlands’ most outstanding ensembles join the virtuoso American percussionist and conductor Steven Schick for a marathon performance of Scottish composer James Dillon’s masterpiece Nine Rivers. This vast, ambitious work consists of nine parts for varying instrumentations, ranging from solo percussion and a cappella choir to strings and electronics. The piece focuses on the river as a metaphor for time and memory, while also playing games with the memory of the audience.
Dillon was inspired to write Nine Rivers by Rimbaud’s Le Bateau Ivre. Just as the boat in this famous poem crashes through the river towards the ocean, Dillon’s music moves from weightless hyperactivity through bleak horror to Wagnerian grandeur in a long, continuous, ever evolving ritual.
Tickets €30 - 22.50, students/CJP €17.50 all categories. Running time 6 hours including intervals. Introduction from 4.15.Please note this concert starts at Muziekgebouw aan't IJ then moves to Bimhuis for Part II at 6.30 - 7.30 and 8 - 9pm. The concert then returns to the Muziekgebouw aan't IJ for Part III.Dinner:
Between 6 and 7.30 pm, and between 8 and 9.30 pm you can enjoy a dinner in restaurant Zouthaven. You can book your dinner with your tickets.Image credit: Ada Nieuwendijk

| The Hub, Edinburgh, Edinburgh EH1 2NE, United Kingdom Wednesday 21-Aug-13 10:00pm Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Marco Stroppa and Samuel Favre A vibrant depiction of the natural world and a pioneering work of electronics meet in pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard’s second late-night recital. Aimard has been widely praised for his visionary performances of Messiaen’s radiant piano music. Tonight he evokes the birds, animals, fl owers and landscape of the remarkable La Rousserolle Effarvatte (‘The Reed Warbler’), an avian portrait that charts a whole day in the French countryside through birdsong and the sounds of nature. In his Kontakte (‘Contacts’), Stockhausen harnessed early electronic technology in a thrilling exploration of rhythm, sound and space, pitting electronics against piano against percussion and sending music spinning through space. | ||

In 2013 too, Martin Grubinger, one of the world’s best marimbaphone players, will be present at the festival with a number of programmes, one of them including Stravinsky’s well-known “Rite of Spring”, which had its premiere 100 years ago. | Beethovenhalle, Bonn, 53113 Bonn, Germany Thursday 12-Sep-13 08:00pm Rhythm Pure The keyword of this appearance of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under Manfred Honeck is “rhythm”. The first work on the programme is the concerto for percussion, “Conjurer”, by the American composer John Corigliano. The work is a highly transparent sound study, in which the virtuoso percussionist Martin Grubinger can be heard on more than 30 instruments. Fitting accompaniments to this piece are two compositions by Maurice Ravel, of which the second in particular, the worldfamous “Boléro”, owes its great success to its rhythm.

Het New Yorkse gezelschap Bang on a Can All-Stars staat al 25 jaar bekend om zijn dynamische optredens. Optredens waarin grenzen tussen jazz, rock, klassiek, experimentele muziek en wereldmuziek wegvallen. | Carnegie Hall, Zankel Hall, New York City, NY, New York City, NY, United States Saturday 23-Nov-13 09:00pm So Percussion Of their last appearance at Carnegie Hall, The New Yorker music critic Alex Ross proclaimed that it was "one of the more entertaining and fulfilling evenings I've had in recent years ... I would have happily seen it five more times." For more than a decade, So Percussion has redefined the modern percussion ensemble as a flexible, omnivorous entity, pushing its voice to the forefront of American musical culture. The group brings its adventurous spirit and “exhilarating blend of precision and anarchy, rigor, and bedlam” (The New Yorker) to a program that includes a major work they commissioned from David Lang, as well as the world premiere of a new work by composer-guitarist Bryce Dessner. This concert is part of Late Nights at Zankel Hall Dessner, Bryce (b. 1976), New Work (World Premiere, commissioned by Carnegie Hall) Various, Triple Music (SO PERCUSSION / DAVID LANG / BRYCE DESSNER / MATMOS)
