The Chamber Philharmonic Europe is an orchestra of some sixty players from all over Europe, founded in Cologne in 2006. During this past month, ten of its players have been touring a popular classical programme round small venues across the country, taking classical music to the far-flung reaches of the kingdom. Heading south from concerts in Thurso and Inverurie, this performance found them in Birnam Arts Centre near Dunkeld, Scotland, where a decent crowd filled the hall.

One would think that either Renée Fleming or Susan Graham alone would be reason enough to sell out a large venue such as Disney Hall. But everything is bigger in Hollywood, and the LA Phil brought both artists together for a one-night recital of French art song. But even that wasn’t enough. This was not an ordinary recital with neatly arranged sets of the typical repertoire finished off with a few predictable encores, concluded in two hours’ time. No, this was a thoughtful survey of French mélodies and their English-speaking muses, with slideshows, anecdotes, and stories.

Once upon a time it was standard practice that most public concerts in Britain would be preceded by the National Anthem; last night in Huddersfield Town Hall a great many members of the audience were caught off guard when a brass and percussion fanfare struck up into the loudest, most ecstatic rendition of ‘God Save the Queen’ I have ever heard.
