His programmes with his current orchestra, the Iceland Symphony, and his previous one, the BBC Scottish Symphony, often consist entirely of such works. This concert, featuring works from the 20th and 21st centuries, was ideally suited to Volkov’s lucid and intelligent conducting.

Kronos Quartet: A Musical Meditation on 9/11

Especially, I must confess, when I learned that the recital would feature a children’s choir. There was a chance, I thought, that this would be taking things slightly too far. Would this be the moment when the Kronos’ famed rock-star approach to concerts slipped into overblown self-parody? Would this be their Zoo tour?
