| Barbican Centre: Hall, London, Silk Street, London EC2Y 8DS, United Kingdom Friday 17-Jan-14 07:30pm Artist Spotlight: Vengerov and Friends For this concert violin megastar Maxim Vengerov has assembled a 'supergroup' of his closest friends and collaborators including his long-standing recital partner Itamar Golan. Two years after he’d announced he was giving up composing for good, Johannes Brahms made a surprise discovery. Tucked away in the little town of Meiningen was an orchestra with a clarinettist so talented Brahms was unwittingly forced to pick up his pen once more. Inspired by the golden, mellifluous tones of Richard Mühlfeld’s playing, Brahms created a string of masterpieces including an autumnal Clarinet Quintet full of golden browns and burnished bronzes. The piece is performed alongside Shostakovich’s triumphant, straight-to-the-heart Piano Quintet and Prokofiev’s haunting overture on Hebrew themes.
