Mark Morris Dance Group presents Mozart Dances in Madrid

Mark Morris Dance Group has come to the Spanish capital to offer only six performances of its internationally acclaimed Mozart Dances. Premièred in New York in 2006 during the Mostly Mozart Festival, the piece has three movements, “Eleven”, “Double” and “Twenty Seven”, respectively set to Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 11, Sonata for two pianos in D major and Piano Concerto no. 12.

American Ballet Theatre's 70th anniversary Rodeo

First on the program was Mark Morris’ musical interpretation of Ben Jonson’s poem Song to Celia, actually first created for ABT fifteen years ago, though it showed no signs of wear-and-tear on Tuesday night.

These classically trained dancers are given the opportunity to sample many wonderful new works, rather than a repertoire of old traditional masterpieces. In figure-hugging unitards and chiffon skirts, they are loosed to fly and spin in a variety of styles, in works especially created for their particular talents by an array of top international choreographers.

Mark Morris premieres new work in Brooklyn
Image credit: Mark Morris Dance Group; © Katsuyoshi TanakaEven Mikhail Baryshnikov was curious to stop by the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) on Thursday March 1st to the witness the world premiere of Mark Morris’ A Choral Fantasy. The work sets movement to the score of Beethoven’s Fantasy in C minor for piano, chorus, and orchestra, Op. 80. He paired the piece along with his earlier adaptation of the opera Four Saints in Three Acts with music by Virgil Thomson and words by Gertrude Stein.
