| Fairfield, Croydon, London, Park Ln, Croydon, London CR9 1DG, United Kingdom Thursday 12-Dec-13 07:30pm London Mozart Players We are delighted to welcome the hugely talented British clarinettist Mark Simpson, winner of the 2006 BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition, who performs a celebrated piece written during Mozart’s miraculously inspired final year. The Don Giovanni Overture provides a thrilling introduction to the conflicting comedy and tragedy explored in what is often described as Mozart’s greatest operatic work. Ginastera was one of the most famous Argentinian composers, whose pupils included the popular tango composer Piazzolla. This concerto for orchestra is a striking example of the composer’s skills, a test of virtuosity for all string players! The concert concludes with an introduction to the LMP’s season-long celebration of Schubert’s ‘local’ connections. His first symphony received its world première at the Crystal Palace, written at the age of just sixteen. | ||

The composer’s New World Symphony regularly appears in the top ten of favourite symphonies; it was written in 1893 whilst the composer was living in America and was even launched into space by Neil Armstrong as the piece he chose to accompany him on the Apollo 11 moon landing!

Ravel’s charming Mother Goose Suite opens the concert, before Richard Strauss’ masterpiece, the hauntingly beautiful Four Last Songs, is performed by one of this country’s most outstanding sopranos, Claire Rutter. Butterworth’s pastoral rhapsody A Shropshire Lad forms a sort of postlude to his song setting of A. E. Housman’s famous cycle of poems, a lush piece of English music which stands in perfect contrast to Mendelssohn’s stunning Reformation Symphony, written when the composer was just 21

| Fairfield, Croydon, London, Park Ln, Croydon, London CR9 1DG, United Kingdom Thursday 20-Mar-14 07:30pm London Mozart Players Renowned British violinist Anthony Marwood returns to Fairfield with Gérard Korsten and the LMP in a concert celebrating the music of the Romantic period. Mendelssohn visited the Hebrides in 1830 and he sent the opening phrase of the overture on a postcard to his sister, writing: “In order to make you understand how extraordinarily The Hebrides affected me, I send you the following, which came into my head there”. Schumann’s Violin Concerto was one of the very last pieces he wrote, but only received its première in 1937 after its dedicatee, the violinist Joachim, refused to allow it to be performed. The première of Schubert’s Second Symphony was also delayed significantly; completed in 1815 its first performance was 63 years later at Crystal Palace. | ||

| Fairfield, Croydon, London, Park Ln, Croydon, London CR9 1DG, United Kingdom Thursday 10-Apr-14 07:30pm London Mozart Players Howard Shelley returns to Fairfield Halls with his second LMP programme; this a charming and unusual combination of Haydn and Poulenc. Haydn was the great classical symphonist who did more than any other composer before him to push the boundaries of the form. The great London symphony was the final of six written for the composer’s second visit to London, by which time he was one of the most celebrated composers in Europe. One common thread that links both Haydn and Poulenc is perhaps their use of humour in their compositions. Poulenc was a member of Les Six, the group of six composers in the 1920s that swept aside the styles of Wagner and Impressionism, bringing strength and simplicity to new music. The Aubade, a love song or poem evoking daybreak, is scored for piano and 18 other instruments, whilst the Sinfonietta is a ‘sweet and sour’ work with overtones of romanticism, underscored by darker emotions which are never far from the surface. | ||

| Fairfield, Croydon, London, Park Ln, Croydon, London CR9 1DG, United Kingdom Thursday 29-May-14 07:30pm London Mozart Players The LMP rounds off their season with one of the most outstanding pianists of her generation, Angela Hewitt. Renowned the world over for her performances and recordings, we are delighted to welcome her to Fairfield Halls and to work with the London Mozart Players for the first time to perform Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 17. Tippett’s Divertimento for Chamber Orchestra opens the concert, a set of variations based on an Irish dance tune harmonised by the Elizabethan Composer William Byrd, called ‘Sellinger’s Round’. We conclude our season with Beethoven’s Second Symphony, the final work in the composer’s ‘early period’, remarkable for evoking the natural world’s beauty. | ||
