Does Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein’s 1927 musical properly belong in the opera house, and should a precious slot in an opera company’s season be devoted to such popular and obviously commercial entertainment? Do the moneylenders need to be driven out of the temple?

Prom 59: The Broadway Sound with the John Wilson Orchestra

Given the stature of the internationally renowned John Wilson and his handpicked orchestra, they were undoubtedly going to impress in a live performance – and sure enough, an opening of sweeping strings intermittently punctuated with punchy brass chords blew the audience across the Atlantic to the Broadway stage in Gershwin’s Overture to Funny Face, which opened the concert.
