Image credit: Allegri String Quartet © Benjamin EalovegaDurham University’s concert series Musicon has been moving around different venues in the city over the last few years, and this year has been putting on concerts in the College chapel of St Hild and St Bede. The traditional sideways-facing rows of seats are sometimes a bit awkward for concerts, but the Allegri Quartet used the layout to their advantage, and positioned themselves in a circle right in the middle of the chapel, in the heart of the audience.

The Juilliard School: Peter Jay Sharp Theater
America's young talent on show at the Juilliard's Cunning Little Vixen
Image credit: Karen Vuong as Fox, Julia Bullock as Vixen © Nan MelvilleGenerally, opera doesn’t give old age much of a look-in, but the closing scene of Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen, written in Janáček’s old age, is an exception, as the Forester muses on the passing of time and the renewing cycle of life. In today’s Juilliard School production, Aubrey Allicock gave us the most touching and thoughtful of renderings. Through the whole opera, his voice was a delight to listen to: gloriously full, rich and smooth, with the power to cut through the orchestra and fill the Juilliard’s 900-seater Peter Jay Sharp Theater.

The Hallé and Sir Mark Elder: Mahler and the Military Symphony
