| Montreal Chamber Music Festival at St George's Church, Montreal, QC, 1101 Rue Stanley, Montreal H3B 2S2, Canada Thursday 23-May-13 08:00pm Bach Week: The Complete Brandenburg Concertos Bach wrote these six concertos for various instruments for the Margrave of Brandenburg who would eventually become the King of Prussia and Saxony. He was never paid and never thanked! It took 150 years before they became known as the Brandenburg Concertos and they are considered to be the greatest works in the Baroque repertoire. You’ll hear all of them in this concert that features a star-studded cast led by distinguished British violinist Elizabeth Wallfisch and including trumpet sensation Jens Lindemann and the winners of the Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank 2012 Competition along with many of Montreal’s finest musicians.
Today the Bank possesses 35 million dollars of string instruments and, through competition, offers each one for three years to outstanding young Canadian artists. A few of the instruments came together on stage at the Festival several years ago but otherwise the collection, which includes Stradivarius, Guarneri del Gesù and Gagliano, has never been heard in performance on the same stage at the same time. Until now! For the first time in the history of the Canada Council, we are proud to present 16 winners of the 2012 competition. This concert features each performer in a solo work by Bach. An historic event!Jens Lindemann, Trumpet Vincent Lauzer, Recorder Kirsten Zander, Oboe Elizabeth Wallfisch, Violin Jocelyn Roy, Flute Hank Knox, Harpsichord Alex Raine-Wright, Recorder Louis-Philippe Marsolais, Horn Jocelyn Veilleux, Horn Marc Gibbons, Oboe Marcus Thompson, Viola Betsy Macmillan, Viola da Gamba Elin Söderström, Viola da Gamba Denis Brott, Cello James VanDemark, Double Bass | ||

| Church of Peace Sanssouci, Potsdam, Am Grünen Gitter 3, 14469, Potsdam, Germany Saturday 15-Jun-13 07:30pm Concerto Copenhagen When the Swedish crown prince marries the Prussian Princess Luise Ulrike in 1744, Johan Helmich Roman, Sweden’s first major composer, writes the wedding music. The king’s brother travelling as ambassador between Stockholm and Kassel brings Johan Joachim Agrell from Uppsala to Germany where the composer lives and works for forty years. The Saxon Johann Adolph Scheibe in turn is recommended by his employer to the Queen of Denmark who happens to be his sister and becomes an influential co-creator of musical life in Copenhagen. And Telemann, musical director of Hamburg, wittily portrays Swedes, Danes and Germans in his suite – after all the second largest Danish city is right at his doorstep – Hamburg Altona. Their music speaks a language that is understood everywhere because it joyfully absorbs the best of all nations.

| New Garden: Palm Hall, Potsdam, Am neuen Garten, 14467 Potsdam, Germany Sunday 16-Jun-13 06:00pm Never Heard!? This evening promises a rendezvous with several unknowns. J.A.P. Schulz whose work in Berlin, Rheinsberg and Copenhagen actively influenced the musical life of his period was even mentioned in one breath with Haydn by his contemporaries. He is introduced here as an original, multifaceted piano composer – and the tangent piano which combines the advantages of harpsichord, clavichord and forte piano is also brought back. Schulze’s students in Copenhagen include C.E.F. Weyse who himself became an institution in the Danish music scene later, a gifted pianist whose improvisational art amazed even Franz Liszt. Christine Schornsheim on the other hand is not unknown to the piano lover: this passionate performer and dedicated specialist for historical keyboard instruments is certain to look after these rarities exceptionally well. | Holley Hall, Sarasota, FL, 709 North Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34236, United States Thursday 20-Jun-13 04:30pm The Power of Music You’ll be awed by the raw fervor of these pieces. Though intimate in the size of its performing forces, chamber music is every bit as commanding an emotional as the great orchestral masterworks. Brahms’ Sonata for Cello and Piano is expressive, intense, and forceful. The cello sings in this incredible work of genius. Baroque music is more known for complicated melodies than the more emotional Romantic Era. However, Telemann shows us that Baroque music can be as poignant and expressive. The Baal Shem Suite is a distinctly personal piece and an ode to the composer’s Jewish background. | ||

Indeed, because music was so highly appreciated at the Courts, composers were often paid to travel in order to bring back the latest styles and compositions. So it was that during the first half of the eighteenth century many French composers adopted Italian elements in their compositions, and also used the Italian vocabulary to name works and movements.
