Beethoven did not take precedence in this concert, but he stole the title. As part of the “Brilliant Beethoven” concert series, the Bristol Ensemble performed the Seventh Symphony of the well-known composer. It was programmed at the end of the evening alongside Debussy, Vivaldi and current composer Alexis Alrich. The theme connecting the different works was rhythm. A prelude, two concertos and a symphony later, Colston Hall was near to having its audience tap-dancing – well, at least on my row. The last three pieces of the evening were competitively catchy.

| There is a famous scene in the noir classic The Third Man in which Joseph Cotten returns to his hotel and is swiftly bundled into a cab that speeds off recklessly through the streets of Vienna. His kidnapping comes minutes after he has been fingered as a murder suspect by the locals, and once the car screeches to a halt he emerges, a nervous wreck, to encounter a gathering he’d forgotten about, or more precisely, never bothered to remember in the first place. Marc Brew Company’s Fusional Fragments lit up the Queen Elizabeth Hall in a double bill that marked the first night of performances in the Southbank Centre’s Unlimited festival, a project showcasing work by deaf and disabled artists alongside the London Paralympic Games.
