| Usher Hall, Edinburgh, Edinburgh EH1 2EA, United Kingdom Wednesday 28-Aug-13 08:00pm Ensemble musikFabrik A concert of blazing energy, infectious rhythms and big sounds as Cologne-based contemporary music group Ensemble musikFabrik celebrates the sometimes outrageous music of US maverick Frank Zappa. Led from the drumkit by superstar percussionist Dirk Rothbrust, the ensemble explores connections between Zappa’s wild creations, from the vibrant funk of Don’t You Ever Wash That Thing? to the atmospheric t’Mershi Duween, and the classical music that he so admired. Ensemble musikFabrik also performs the remarkable Ionisation for 13 percussionists by Zappa’s lifelong hero Edgard Varèse, a celebration of the sounds of modern city life. John Cage’s classic Credo in Us, written in response to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, supplements the percussion ensemble with turntable and radioreceiver. Image credit: Klaus Rudolph | ||

| Kunstmuseum Bonn, Friedrich-Ebert-Allee 2, 53113 Bonn, Germany Sunday 22-Sep-13 07:00pm Changing Timbres Rebecca Saunders’s work “Chroma” is a “sound project on tour”. For every venue where it’s performed, the composer develops a new version of this spatial collage. Thanks to its unique transparent architecture, the Kunstmuseum Bonn provides ideal conditions for experiencing new lines of sight and sound. Various instrumental groups and sound objects are distributed around the exhibition rooms, interacting with one another. The audience are invited to move around, following the timbres. The work will be played twice in succession, providing an opportunity for hearing it from entirely different perspectives.

In 1933 legde Zappa
