In Death in Venice, Britten revisits the subject of corruption of youth and innocence that so fascinated him and delivers a haunting theatrical experience of consummate power.
Deborah Warner’s production of Britten’s final opera celebrates the composer’s centenary year and reaffirms ENO’s position as the world’s leading producer of his operas. This production reunites award-winning director Warner with ENO Music Director Edward Gardner, who returns to Britten following ENO’s productions of Billy Budd (2012) and Peter Grimes (2009), for which his conducting was described as ‘deeply musical’ (Financial Times).

Ook op zijn 75e is De Leeuw nog even gedreven als krachtig. In dit feestelijke verjaardagsconcert – tevens de opening van de Donderdagavondserie – dirigeert hij zelf werk van Gérard Grisey (1946-1998). Als verjaardagscadeau voert Asko|Schönberg twee werken uit die hem na aan het hart liggen.
Schönbergs Suite op. 29 behoort tot het kernrepertoire van Reinbert de Leeuw en Asko|Schönberg. De Leeuws liefde voor de muziek van Grisey is van recentere datum. In Quatre chants pour franchir le seuil schetst de Franse componist een aangrijpend beeld van de teloorgang van de beschaving.

Het danstheatergezelschap ISH en ensemble VOCAALLAB transformeren de opera L'Incoronazione di Poppea van barokcomponist Monteverdi tot een eigen, unieke voorstelling. Een heftig verhaal waarin het streven naar macht samenvalt met de kracht van de liefde.
De voorstelling toerde eerder in najaar 2011 en werd alom lovend ontvangen. Vier breakdancers, een beatboxer, vier zangers, vier instrumentalisten en een dj laten zien wat het streven naar macht en geld doet met het karakter van mensen. De vraag die opdoemt, is of de zucht naar macht niet beter vervangen kan worden door het streven naar geluk.

The Bavarian State Ballet responds to the call for innovation in dance during the season by dedicating it to the classic modernity as well as challenging its audience’s perceptions with original contemporary works. With his masterpiece Choreartium, originating from the tradition of the Ballets Russes, choreographer Léonide Massine laid the groundwork for future artists by visualizing music through dance. How do we handle the responsibility of keeping alive the legacies created by past choreographers? When the quality of the work itself transcends all of its contemporary ties and cross-references, it carries over seamlessly to the next generation: it is indeed Forever young… A certain part of this legacy arguably is to be kept in archives – the rest needs to stay alive through performance. The Bavarian State Ballet responds to the call for innovation in dance during the season by dedicating it to the classic modernity as well as challenging its audience’s perceptions with original contemporary works. With his masterpiece Choreartium, originating from the tradition of the Ballets Russes, choreographer Léonide Massine laid the groundwork for future artists by visualizing music through dance. Thereby, he created unsentimental works that, apart from their metaphysical content, stand for pure aesthetic 'material' which will be accessible to many generations to come. José Limón’s ballet The Moor‘s Pavane, a take on Shakespeare’s drama between Otello and Desdemona, focuses on the human inability to love, trust and his lack of compassion and empathy. To this day, the ballet by Mexican-American choreographer José Limón from 1949 is considered one of the key-repertory pieces of American Modern dance.
