| Wolkenturm, Grafenegg, Grafenegg, Austria Sunday 18-Aug-13 07:30pm Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Even the cool north can warm the hearts of music lovers. You can see so for yourself: both the Prelude and the first part of the evening concert present Scandinavian works by Jean Sibelius and Edvard Grieg. Rudolf Buchbinder, Artistic Director of the Grafenegg Festival, will play the solo part in Grieg’s piano concerto. In the second part of the concert, Charles Dutoit will conduct the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra playing Bartók’s pantomime «The Miraculous Mandarin», a masterpiece with fascinating edges and iridescent colours. The evening rich in contrasts concludes with Ravel’s moving suite «Daphnis et Chloé», which, according to Stravinsky, is «one of the most beautiful products of the entire French music ever written». | ||

| Wolkenturm, Grafenegg, Grafenegg, Austria Sunday 1-Sep-13 07:15pm Mariinsky Orchestra St Petersburg Russia’s leading orchestra, the Mariinsky Orchestra St. Petersburg under the direction of its Music Director Valery Gergiev will bring with them two great yet very different works from the rich musical culture of Russia. Rudolf Buchbinder will play the solo part in Rachmaninov’s «Paganini» rhapsody. The other work is Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 11: yet another piece in which the composer critically examined the relationship between political power and music. The symphony commemorates the «Bloody Sunday in St. Petersburg» of 1905, when peaceful protesters were killed outside the Tsar’s palace. The Prelude will also present works by the two Russian composers. | ||

| Beethovenhalle, Bonn, 53113 Bonn, Germany Thursday 19-Sep-13 08:00pm Microcosm of Genius The “Diabelli-Variations” are Beethoven’s last great work for the piano, and at the same time his most extensive cycle of variations, in which he forces together everything that makes life and music what they are. Few pianists dare to present this work, but Rudolf Buchbinder, familiar since his youth with Beethoven’s music, is one of them. He succeeds in presenting this “microcosm of Beethoven’s genius” (Hans von Bülow) with humour – Beethoven as the artist of metamorphoses.

| Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool, Liverpool, United Kingdom Sunday 18-May-14 07:30pm Petrenko's Prokofiev A horn calls softly in the distance; the piano sighs in response… it’s a magically romantic way to begin a great piano concerto. But Johannes Brahms knows exactly what he’s doing, and the great Austrian pianist Rudolf Buchbinder brings a lifetime of artistry to this loveliest of concertos. From tender opening to exuberant finish, you’ll never take a sunnier journey in the company of a grand piano and a symphony orchestra – or find a more powerful contrast to Prokofiev’s shattering Sixth Symphony. If, like so many, you’ve been thrilled by Petrenko’s Shostakovich symphonies with the Orchestra, we think you’ll be knocked backwards by this tragic masterpiece from the darkest years of the Stalin era: music whose message never gets any less powerful. | ||
