| Opernhaus, Zürich, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Saturday 14-Dec-13 08:00pm Sale - A Handel project by Christoph Marthaler Running time 1 hour 55 minutes without interval. “Whenever I contemplated the head of Georg Friedrich Handel,” wrote John Christopher Smith, the composer’s secretary, on 1 April 1760 in his diary, which was found only recently in the estate of the owner of a London department store, “I could not help but imagine the brain of this extraordinary man as an endless row of shelves. Stored there and dismantled into thousands of individual components, the music lay ready, wanting to escape, and already coming out of the space delimited by the skull in an alarmingly disorderly manner. Now that the great composer has left this world, I am worried about those sounds, that music, which anticipated the entire future, lying undiscovered on those shelves, beyond reach and sealed, several feet down, hidden like a grave in a pyramid, secured with deadly traps. I am afraid because posterity will leave no stone unturned to raise Georg Friedrich’s hidden treasures and expose them to the destruction that is a clearance sale. The first investors have already announced that the grave is to be opened. May they lose their way in the labyrinths built in Georg Friedrich’s final resting place to deceive undesirable intruders – and may they never find their way out again! And if they do manage to get as far as those hidden shelves, I would call out to them imploringly: Handle with care!”Laurence Cummings, Conductor Christoph Marthaler, Director Orchestra La Scintilla Zurich Anna Viebrock, Set Designer Anne Sofie von Otter, Mezzo-soprano: Head of the dynasty and Department store director Marc Bodnar, Actor: Her late, third husband Raphael Clamer, Actor: Illegitimate son of the store director and branch manager Malin Hartelius, Soprano: Neice of department store director Christophe Dumaux, Countertenor: Great-nephew of the store director Graham Valentine, Actor: Close English speaking relative Tora Augestad, Soprano: Norwegian American relative | ||
